What Does a SOC Analyst Actually Do? cover

The SOC analyst role is the most common entry point into security, and also the most misrepresented. Here is what a normal shift looks like.

The queue sets the pace

Alerts arrive continuously from endpoints, firewalls, identity providers and cloud services. Your job is to decide quickly which ones deserve investigation and which are noise the detection rules need tuned for.

Investigation is mostly correlation

A single alert rarely tells a story. You pull related events, check whether the user behaviour is normal, and confirm whether anything actually executed.

  • Confirm the alert with a second data source
  • Establish a timeline before drawing conclusions
  • Escalate early when scope is unclear

Documentation is the deliverable

Whatever you find, the next shift and the incident lead read your notes rather than your screen. Analysts who write clearly get promoted faster than analysts who only work fast.
